I make sketchbooks.

Carrying a sketchbook with me is a great way to jot down ideas for use later on. The only problem is there’s not many out there  that are to my liking without paying a hefty price for it.
When I’m almost finish with a sketchbook, I tend to make them instead nowadays.

A) It’s cheaper than buying pre-made.

B) I get full control on materials I like.

C) I get to make it in arbitrary sizes that they might not carry in stores.

 

Epic logos

 

I don’t think I ever showed these. For the EPIC group, early in the beginning we had a contest to come up with a logo for the group. The idea behind it was to make a logo that we can plug our own artistic touch into it, much like the many MTV logos out there. These were my ideas. My personal favorite is the red one.

The final template goes to a design of a pencil in a shape of an e. I turned it into a monster and also played around with skiing. I even went a little overboard and lost track of the main purpose and made a picture out of it.

I went to the sketch night at the Society of Illustrators this tuesday. I’ve been playing around with my speed while using watercolor. i wanted to see how fast i can paint…

i skip the process of drawing the outline with the pencil completely and just trusted my instinct on where everything should be. Being that i see objects more in shapes than in lines anyway, it was easier and faster.

there were a couple of poses where the model wasn’t well lit from my angle, so instead i did a pencil sketch instead.

(on a note to self: I am always appreciative of the amount of options of customization I can have with wordpress that tumblr can’t do. One of the reasons why I’m glad i haven’t gotten rid of this blog)

i recently touched back into watercolors. it seems like doing portraits is the easiest way for me to get back into the medium. Here is a painting i did of my friend Justine : )

sneak peak

I’ve been working on a picture that will be used at an auction. The commission isn’t much but i get full artist direction on the picture so it’s enjoyable.

The only requirement was that it needs to involve the Subway or MTA. so this is the sketch of what it will look like. now i need to decide if i want to do the finish in either oils, Gouache, or watercolor. Finish will be coming in a couple of days.

graduating…

i was giving the assignment 24 hours ago to do the news cover for the school newspaper. the topic was about graduating. So i came up with these thumbnails:

after asking a few people, like myself they all liked the upper right hand corner one. so i worked that up to a better level.

knowing myself, i never feel satisfied with my own work. i always think that it can be better. but being that it’s due on such a short deadline, this will have to do. i”ll finish it later.

there’s about a week left of school. which means a week from now, we will be taking off those training wheels on our bikes called the real world. It’s a mixed of emotions much like a good stew. There’s bunch of ingredients:

-relief that school’s over
-anxiety that we won’t make it in this world
-excited to try our own methods/ approach to art.
-Bitter about our regrets of what we never got to do or should have done instead.
-nostalgic of all the fun, stupid, retarded, sad, stressful times school can be.
-Salty for those times where we had to dive head first and get dirty.
-hyped to get out there and start our professional lives,

wow. ‘Professional’. that word really gets my heart racing.
we’ll made it for now, but it’s only a plateau till we hit the next climb of this higher mountain of life.

we will make something of ourselves. you just watch world… cuz here we come!

real quick sketch

i finished my oil painting early in class today and i wanted to make full use of the model so i pulled out my computer and sketched this in the last 30 minutes of the class.

i was surprised i got so much information in.

drink and draw

silly me. i was going through the oodles of sketchbooks that i have to work up on some sketches for homework and i found some drawings i did for Drink and Draw event at 3rdward.com that i never posted.

The Drink and Draw event was fun. I didn’t go overboard on the drinking though. i wonder how my drawings would look if i really pushed myself a little more. Anyone want to join me next time?

i knew i was somewhat productive, but not having anything to show for it made me feel empty. Looking back at all my sketchbooks proves me wrong at times. They may not be finished pieces, but there’s so much rich information in there that i knew if i didn’t jot it down at the time, i would have forgotten it all together on what could have been an amazing future piece. you can say they are the keys to my mind.

speaking of sketchbooks. i made one recently! more to come about that on the next entry to come.

Drawathon 2010

On friday, i went to the Drawathon at Pratt for the first time. It was such a fantastic night. i had lots of fun and i hope to do it again next semester. There was lots of rooms to sketch in and i took the opportunity to work on real life digital sketching.

i’m pretty sure i was the only person who was crazy enough to bring a computer and tablet to draw on the premises. i didn’t see anyone else doing it.

i have to say it went well. I want to do more of this kind of stuff in the future.
