Sketch night 10/26/10

I went to the sketch night at the Society of Illustrators this tuesday. I’ve been playing around with my speed while using watercolor. i wanted to see how fast i can paint…

i skip the process of drawing the outline with the pencil completely and just trusted my instinct on where everything should be. Being that i see objects more in shapes than in lines anyway, it was easier and faster.

there were a couple of poses where the model wasn’t well lit from my angle, so instead i did a pencil sketch instead.

(on a note to self: I am always appreciative of the amount of options of customization I can have with wordpress that tumblr can’t do. One of the reasons why I’m glad i haven’t gotten rid of this blog)

graduating…

Posted in journal, sketch with tags , , , , on May 8, 2010 by yuquan

i was giving the assignment 24 hours ago to do the news cover for the school newspaper. the topic was about graduating. So i came up with these thumbnails:

after asking a few people, like myself they all liked the upper right hand corner one. so i worked that up to a better level.

knowing myself, i never feel satisfied with my own work. i always think that it can be better. but being that it’s due on such a short deadline, this will have to do. i”ll finish it later.

there’s about a week left of school. which means a week from now, we will be taking off those training wheels on our bikes called the real world. It’s a mixed of emotions much like a good stew. There’s bunch of ingredients:

-relief that school’s over
-anxiety that we won’t make it in this world
-excited to try our own methods/ approach to art.
-Bitter about our regrets of what we never got to do or should have done instead.
-nostalgic of all the fun, stupid, retarded, sad, stressful times school can be.
-Salty for those times where we had to dive head first and get dirty.
-hyped to get out there and start our professional lives,

wow. ‘Professional’. that word really gets my heart racing.
we’ll made it for now, but it’s only a plateau till we hit the next climb of this higher mountain of life.

we will make something of ourselves. you just watch world… cuz here we come!

i finished my oil painting early in class today and i wanted to make full use of the model so i pulled out my computer and sketched this in the last 30 minutes of the class.

i was surprised i got so much information in.

st. patrick’s cathedral

For documentary class this past thursday we went to the St. Patrick’s Cathedral. It was an opportunity for me to test out the new mini watercolor set that Margaret help me made. : ).

I love it! The colors are so saturated compared to the Winsor Newton travel set i bought.

wasn’t so bad of a day

I thought i was going to have a horrible day today. I had to run around all over the place, get my speech for tonight done, then prepare for tomorrows speech and cancel on the Bill Plympton event at the Society of Illustrators.

But reviewing it, it wasn’t a bad day at all. I got my watch fixed, I got to ride my longboard all over the place, I ate some good Congee, i finished my speech and prepared a keynote for it and then my classmate tells me our professor isn’t feeling so well and that class is cancelled. With much excitement I rushed over to the Society and GaBam!! I got an autographed sketch from Bill Plympton himself. It was awesome.

The Show was fantastic, I learned a little of how he does his drawings and his short animations were all so hilarious to watch. I especially liked Fascist Santa, that got me cracking up so hard. and he drew me a sketch of that too!

I even managed to get myself to sketch on the train ride home which rarely happens anymore because I’m usually so tired. The whole night ended on a good note. : )

you go girl!

sketches

sketchstill drawing. still learning. i’ve been putting more effort into sketches than final work lately. it seems to be more satisfying to me because theres that quick definitive attitude towards doing sketches. you can’t change your mind or revise on a sketch because it’s not meant to be revised. if you try revising it, your original train of thought is lost.  timesqInstead it’s meant to be a footprint of an idea from where you walked previously so you can look back and see what brought you here today skill-wise. just turn around and see those imprints on the dirt floor and you’ll realize your reason and your effort towards your goal.09

i’ve been trying to be more confident with my strokes. and what better training than to do calligraphy and sumi ink. the beauty of this type of art lies in how decisive and how much pressure you put towards a line. once it’s laid down, thats it! what energy! i got a long way to go of course.intrain

sketch night 07/02/09

Here’s some sketches I did at the society last thursday. it took me a while to upload them because there’s so much going on around in my life right now. Despite being so busy, i’m glad i at least took the time to do some uploading on the blog. whenever i post something here it reassures myself that i’m doing something productive. looking back at some older entries and seeing the duration between each one makes me feel a bit pathetic because i’m not maintaining this blog to my original standards. it went from everyday, to every other day, to every week, to every month. but now it’s picking back up to every week again! so i’m happy

soi2

I’m slowly acclimating to the new Winsor Newton portable color’s that i got recently,

SOI1i’ll give it another shot or 2 before i stick with my primary watercolor set. in my opinion, tube paints are much better than the ones in blocks. Tube paints are so much more saturated with color and it’s loose so you can pick up more on the brush.

soi3i’ve also been using a brown pencil, it’s pretty refreshing compared to using a plain pencil sometimes.

i still have a couple of things i want to post up. but seeing how my schedule plays out, it might take me another week until it gets posted. stay tune though!! i have something very interesting on the way.
